The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has affirmed that his country has «open doors» for Pedro Castillo, for his family and for «all those who feel harassed and persecuted» in Peru, where he hopes there will be «soon» parliamentary and presidential elections.

Peruvian President Dina Boluarte assured on Sunday that the Mexican Government had granted political asylum to Castillo’s wife and son, after the former Peruvian president had already tried to take refuge in the Mexican Embassy in Lima the day he was dismissed by Congress.

López Obrador avoided confirming in a press conference that this asylum is closed and suggested that everything «will depend on President Castillo». «If he wants it, we have the doors open,» he added, despite the fact that his ally is currently in preventive detention.

The Mexican president has affirmed that Castillo’s arrest was «illegal», since it was his own guards who carried it out and without a warrant. This arrest took place before he could arrive at the Embassy and, according to López Obrador, now «it is a different situation from the beginning».

In this sense, he denounced the repression of the demonstrations and demanded that «the democratic method» be applied in Peru, that it be the people «who decide freely» in new elections. The Mexican president said he was «sure» that, once these elections are called, «tempers will calm down» in the streets.
