South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on Monday apologized to the public for the impossibility of passing the 2023 budget law for the time being and asked the government to get the go-ahead as soon as possible.
Yoon pointed out that the budget for next year is of great importance and said that it is necessary «to revitalize the economy and protect vulnerable groups in the midst of the economic crisis».
Lee Jae Myoung, a presidential spokesman, said Yoon «said he is sorry even though the bill is being delayed.» «He has asked the government to focus on principles and do its best to pass the budget to fulfill its duty before the people,» he said.
The deadline for approval was December 2, according to reports by Yonhap news agency. The president also called for taking the necessary steps to push forward key policies to help South Koreans.
Yoon also called for increasing the participation of young people in state affairs, something «crucial for the administration’s policy,» and asked Prime Minister Han Duck Soo to launch new scholarship programs.
