At least three Jordanian policemen were killed Monday during an operation to arrest a suspect suspected of killing an officer last week amid protests in the southern Maan province over rising fuel prices.
The operation, which resulted in five other officers being injured, ended with the death of the suspect, while eight other people were arrested, the Public Security Department (PSD) said on its website.
Thus, it indicated that «the investigations into the case and those arrested continue and have been presented before the judicial apparatus», while praising the work of the deceased officers, whom it described as «martyrs», for their «defense of the security of the homeland».
«The blood of the martyrs will only increase our strength and determination to continue our sacred duty, in line with the commitment we have made to ourselves,» the PSD said in its statement, in which it identified the deceased officers as Gaiz Qasem al Rahahlé, Moataz Musa al Najada and Ibrahim Atef al Shaqarin.
The operation was launched after the death on Thursday of the ‘number two’ of the police in the city of Maan, Abdulrazaq Dalabé, who was shot in the head during «riots» in the town of Huseiniya, epicenter of protests in the province, which have resulted in dozens of arrests.
The economic crisis in Jordan has been deepened by the increase in fuel prices, which led truck drivers to go on strike. In addition, protests have been taking place in recent days in the face of the deepening economic crisis.
