Mexico’s Defense Ministry arrested Antonio Oseguera, brother of Jalisco Cartel – New Generation (CJNG) leader Nemesio Oseguera, alias ‘El Mencho’, at 5:20 a.m. (local time) on Tuesday.
According to a statement issued by the Mexican Defense Ministry, Antonio Oseguera was arrested in the town of Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, in the state of Jalisco, and is in police custody and is being transferred to a penitentiary.
Antonio Osegura, alias ‘Tony Montana’, is considered by Mexican authorities to be a «presumed logistical operator» of the CJNG and responsible for money laundering activities. He is presumed to be in charge of acquiring weapons and coordinating violent acts.
The security operation to capture ‘Tony Montana’ also resulted in the seizure of six handguns, one long gun, a package of suspected cocaine, two vehicles and nine magazines.
«The arrest of Antonio ‘N’ represents a decisive blow to one of the country’s criminal organizations, as he is considered to be one of the main alleged logistical and financial operators and generators of violence,» said the Ministry of Defense.
JALISCO, ON ALERT Later, Jalisco authorities have acknowledged to be alert to a possible response from the CJNG, even more so when the violent confrontations that occurred in October 2019 when Ovidio Guzmán, son of the renowned drug trafficker ‘Chapo Guzmán’, was arrested, still remain in the memory.
In that episode, known as ‘Black Thursday’, a total of 14 people died, four of them civilians, and more than 20 were injured. The incidents were resolved with the release of Ovidio Guzmán by order of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Now, the coordinator of the Jalisco Security Cabinet, Ricardo Sánchez Beruben, has informed that the three levels of government remain alert to attend to possible altercations that could occur during the next few hours.
Likewise, Sanchez Beruben has called for calm, not to pay attention to rumors and to consult the first hand information offered by the authorities, as reported by the Mexican newspaper ‘El Universal’.
El Mencho’s brother was designated by the US Treasury Department as the head of the CJNG, which also includes Los Cuinis, a group headed by Antonio Oseguera’s brother-in-law.
With this arrest, Mexican authorities further close the fence on ‘El Mencho. Antonio Oseguera joins Rosalinda Gonzalez Valencia, the cartel leader’s wife, who was also arrested in November last year.
According to authorities, the arrest of El Mencho’s wife dealt a «significant» blow to the financial structure of organized crime in the state of Jalisco.
