Torrential rains that have lashed the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil on Tuesday have left at least two people dead and forced the closure of federal and state highways due to unstable terrain.
Two women, aged 17 and 18, died after being buried in the town of Camboriú, according to municipal authorities, who said that both victims were sisters. A third person, a nine-year-old minor, was injured.
The City Council of Camboriú has declared a state of emergency, while health services and educational centers have suspended their activities, according to the Brazilian news portal Universo Online.
The inclement weather has also caused floods that have flooded homes and submerged vehicles, as detailed by the Brazilian authorities, as reported by the local newspaper ‘O Globo’.
The authorities have set up shelters in the cities of Penha, Balneário Camboriú and Palhoça for people displaced by the storms. The Government of Santa Catarina has called to avoid unnecessary displacements.
