The Greek Coast Guard reported Wednesday the discovery off the coast of the island of Lesbos of the body of a baby, presumably a child who fell off a skiff that arrived in the area this month.
The Port Authority of Mytilene was the first to receive notice of the body, which has been transferred to a hospital for autopsy.
The Coast Guard recalled in a statement that on December 9 some 45 migrants arrived in Lesbos and were intercepted in a mountainous area. One of the women, aged 24, declared that her baby had fallen into the sea shortly before reaching the coast, which led to a search that had so far yielded no results.
More than 2,200 migrants and refugees have perished in the eastern Mediterranean since 2014, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which has recorded nearly 370 deaths in 2022 alone.
