Republican congressman admits he lied on his resume to run in U.S. midterms

Republican House member from New York George Santos admitted Monday to making up details about his education and previous job while campaigning for the midterm congressional elections last Nov. 8.

He admitted this during an interview with ‘New York Post’ after ‘The New York Times’ revealed that the congressman had lied on his resume and that he had not obtained the college degrees he claimed to have.

In this regard, Santos — who has been a congressman for only six weeks — had claimed that he had worked at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup consulting firms and that he had graduated from New York University, something that was not true.

The congressman said in the Post interview that he «never worked directly» with either firm and said he would be «clearer about it» in the future. He has also confessed that he did not graduate from New York University, nor from «any institution of higher education», despite his previous claims, reported ‘The Hill’.

Santos also made claims about his family history that could not be proven, such as that his mother’s parents were Ukrainian Jews who fled the Nazi Holocaust to Brazil. However, records obtained by ‘The New York Times’ showed that his mother’s parents were born in Brazil and had no Ukrainian or Jewish ancestors.

«My sins here are embellishing my resume. I’m sorry,» the Republican lawmaker has told the ‘New York Post,’ insisting that the controversy will not prevent him from «good legislative success.»

The Democratic Party, however, has already called for Santos’ resignation, alleging that he has let voters down.

«Republican Congressman-elect George Santos, who has now admitted to his massive lies, should resign. If he doesn’t, then the GOP should call for a vote to expel him,» Democratic Congressman Ted Lieu has said on Twitter.

Another New York Democrat, Congressman Ritchie Torres, has urged the House Ethics Committee to investigate the Republican’s fundraising during the election campaign.

«George Santos admits that his life story is a complete fabrication. His regrettable confession should not distract us from concerns about possible criminality and corruption. The Ethics Committee should investigate how he made his money. Where there is smoke, there is fire,» Ritchie reiterated.
