Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has asked Mexico City’s head of government, Claudia Sheinbaum, not to abandon the investigation into the armed attack against journalist and writer Ciro Gómez Leyva.
«I respectfully ask her not to drop the investigation into what happened to Ciro Gómez Leyva because I want to continue reporting here. It is a very important matter. We cannot stop because we do not repress anyone and we want to know what happened,» said the president in his last press conference of the year.
In this sense, he added that his request is not related to the fact that the journalist is «famous», but because the Executive has a policy of «zero impunity». «We do it in all cases», he said, as reported by the newspaper ‘El Universal’.
Last Monday, López Obrador speculated that the attack could have been carried out by «groups opposed» to the Government and alleged that the event could be related to the «transforming process» being promoted by the Executive.
Journalist and writer Ciro Gómez Leyva was the target of a direct armed attack in Mexico City as he was returning home. Several men on a motorcycle fired shots at a short distance from the van in which he was traveling.
