U.S. Bills linebacker Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiovascular arrest during Monday’s NFL game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills following a defensive play in the first quarter and had to be resuscitated on the field and later transported to the hospital, where he is in critical condition.
«Hamlin received immediate medical treatment on the field by the team, independent physicians and paramedics. He was transported to a local hospital and is in critical condition. Our thoughts are with Damar and the Buffalo Bills. As soon as more information becomes available, we will share it,» NFL head coach Roger Goodell said in an official statement.
For his part, Hamlin’s agent, Ira Turner, was also not optimistic about the 24-year-old athlete’s health status and asked to pray for his family. «We do not have an update (on his condition) at this time. Please keep the player’s family in your prayers,» he said.
After Hamlin was taken off the field by ambulance, Bills players gathered and knelt together in a circle on the ground. Bills coach Sean McDermott, his counterpart Zac Taylor and the referees then decided to call off the game.
