Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has announced that he will lay off more than 18,000 workers, increasing the number the company had been considering according to reports published late last year.
Amazon’s CEO has confirmed this Wednesday this information, which confirms the information previously published by the newspaper ‘Wall Street Journal’.
«Normally we wait to communicate these results once we have been able to talk to the people directly affected. However, since one of our teammates leaked this information to the outside world, we decided it was best to share this news earlier so that you can hear the details directly from me,» explained Jassy.
«We intend to communicate with the affected employees (or, if applicable in Europe, with the employee representative bodies) as of January 18,» he added, as stated in a press release.
However, Jassy was keen to stress that the company has weathered uncertain economic difficulties in the past. «These changes will help us pursue our long-term opportunities with a stronger cost structure,» he said.
«I am also optimistic that we will be resourceful, creative and agile in this time when we are not hiring expansively and eliminating some functions,» he said, before noting that «companies that last a long time go through different phases.»
U.S. e-commerce giant Amazon was considering in November job cuts among its corporate and technology workforce of up to 10,000 employees, according to ‘The New York Times’, citing sources familiar with the company’s plans.
The company closed the first nine months of 2022 with a loss of 3 billion dollars (2.9 billion euros), compared to a profit of 19.041 billion (18.408 billion euros) for the period from January to September 2021. Turnover was 172.37 billion (166.642 billion euros), up 1.2 percent.
