The U.S. House of Representatives voted Wednesday night to adjourn for the election of the body’s speaker until Thursday at noon, after Republican leader Kevin McCarthy failed to win the necessary majority on six ballots.
McCarthy, who has failed to get 218 votes needed in six rounds of balloting between Tuesday and Wednesday, had said he did not want a seventh vote tonight, claiming a deal has not yet been reached, despite progress as lawmakers have met behind closed doors.
«I think it’s probably for the best: let people work some more. I don’t think the vote tonight will do anything different, but I think the vote in the future will,» the Republican representative assured in statements to reporters, picked up by CNN television network.
Republicans are, therefore, trying to plot new strategies in the House of Representatives in an attempt to convince the group of 20 conservative legislators who oppose McCarthy’s election.
Despite negotiations and the support of his main ally, former President Donald Trump, the Republican leader has garnered 201 votes, while Democratic nominee Hakeem Jeffries has garnered 212 votes. The 20 Republicans of the most conservative part of the Republican Party voted in favor of candidate Byron Donaldson.
