The presidents of the United States and Mexico, Joe Biden and Andrés Manuel López Obrador, respectively, and the prime minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, have reaffirmed their support for the Brazilian government «as it safeguards its democratic institutions» following Sunday’s «attacks».
The three leaders issued a joint statement at the start of a regional summit in which they defended «the free choice of the people of Brazil,» expressed at the ballot box in October 2022. «Canada, Mexico and the United States condemn the January 8 attacks on democracy and the peaceful transfer of power in Brazil,» they said.
Thus, Biden, Trudeau and López Obrador hope to continue working with the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the winner of the elections, for the sake of stability in their respective countries and also in the Americas region as a whole.
