The Nigerian Army has announced the death of 76 members of the regional affiliate of the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA) during operations over the last three weeks in the country, which also resulted in the liberation of 150 civilians and the surrender of more than 370 militiamen.

The security forces have launched operations between December 22 and January 12 in more than twenty locations in the country, including cities such as Maidiguri, the capital of Borno state, where they have attacked bases and hideouts of both Boko Haram and ISWA, its offshoot, and have seized numerous military equipment.

The Army has also confirmed the liberation of about 150 civilians held by these terrorist groups, including 68 in the North-West area of the country and another 35 in Borno State.

In the communiqué, reported by the PRNigeria portal, the Army assures that approximately 377 Boko Haram terrorists have laid down their arms and surrendered to the Nigerian security forces.

The Army «thanks the entire population for the support extended to the Armed Forces and other security agencies in the conduct of our various operations across the country» while urging the population to «continue to provide prompt and reliable information on the activities of terrorists and other criminal elements in their respective areas,» according to the note signed by the director general of Defense Media Operations, Major Musa Danmadami.
