The members of the United Nations Security Council reiterated Friday their unanimous support for the peace process in Colombia, stressing the importance of ensuring the full implementation of the agreement.
«We reiterate that addressing insecurity remains vital to the consolidation of peace in Colombia, and we welcome the steps already taken by the (Colombian) Government aimed at halting the suffering of communities affected by the conflict,» reads a statement.
In this sense, the members of the UN Security Council have recalled that «the dismantling of illegal armed groups and criminal organizations would be a significant step towards the reduction of violence».
For this reason, they have remarked that the organization «welcomes the commitment» of Gustavo Petro’s Executive to «seek a broader peace through dialogue.
They also welcomed the cabinet’s announcement of a six-month cease-fire with the armed groups: «We hope that its implementation will contribute to alleviating the suffering of the communities affected by the conflict and to comprehensive peace,» the letter continues.
Nevertheless, the Security Council members reaffirmed their commitment to continue working with Colombia to support the implementation of the agreement, welcoming the commitment of both parties.
