The opposition Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has called for the resignation of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in the context of the country’s energy crisis after Eskom announced that power outages will not be solved for the next 24 months.
«Eskom has reported that even in 24 months’ time, there is no guarantee that available power will be restored above 60 percent of South Africa’s generating capacity,» its leader, Julius Malema, has defended, after which he has called for his resignation, as reported by the ‘Mail and Guardian’ newspaper.
While different opposition parties are charging Ramaphosa for the difficult energy situation in the country, his spokesman, Vincent Magwenya, announced the day before that the president would continue with his agenda of meetings in the framework of the crisis, which has meant that he has not attended the World Economic Forum in Davos, which has started this Monday in the aforementioned Swiss town.
The Confederation of South African Employers (COFESA) on Monday called on Ramaphosa to declare a state of natural disaster and announce urgent measures to contain the effects of the crisis on the economy, which has been dragging on for several months.
Eskom’s power stations are struggling and breakdowns are becoming more frequent, partly due to the lack of maintenance of the plants and their age, so the group has run out of money to buy more diesel and keep its combined cycle gas turbines running.
