German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has stated that he has «a clear idea» about the person who will succeed Christine Lambrecht at the Ministry of Defense, hours after the minister resigned following several controversies in which she has been involved in recent months.
«I have a clear idea and it will be made known to everyone very quickly,» Scholz said during a visit to the Hensoldt armaments company in Ulm in the south of the country. «We will announce it in due course,» he added.
Scholz, Lambrecht’s party colleague, thanked the outgoing minister for her work and publicly expressed his respect for a decision that had been speculated about for several days.
Deputy government spokeswoman Christiane Hoffmann has also confirmed that the changeover in Defense will be swift. «Out of respect for the minister, the decision on who will be her successor will certainly not be known today,» she clarified, before adding that «in no case will it take more than three months to announce a replacement.»
