The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has announced that he will visit the central coast of California this Thursday to observe the damage caused by the storms.

«On January 19, the President will travel to areas along the Central Coast affected by the recent extreme weather conditions in California,» reads a White House statement that promises more information at a later date.

The U.S. leader, who will meet with local authorities and affected communities, aims to review recovery efforts and assess what additional federal support may be needed to alleviate the damage.

Biden approved this Sunday the declaration of catastrophe in the states of California and Alabama, affected since the last weeks by a strong storm, taking a step beyond the declaration of state of emergency.

The President confirmed that there is a serious catastrophe in California, ordering federal aid to carry out the recovery of the areas affected by the strong winter storms.

Some areas of California have recorded as much rain in three weeks as they normally report in an entire year, suffering historic levels of rain and snow, leaving millions of people without power and forcing evacuations, reports NPR.

At least 19 people have died in connection with the storms, although emergency and rescue services are still searching for neighbors who have been swept away by the floods.
