Vietnam’s president, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, resigned on Monday after he was caught up in an alleged corruption scandal, in an unprecedented move that also saw him expelled from the Communist Party’s decision-making bodies.
The Central Committee of the Party met this Monday to study the future of the leader and agreed to accept his resignation and «retire», according to the official news agency, which implies a complete loss of the positions he had been holding.
Phuc, 68, served five years as prime minister before being appointed president by the National Assembly in April 2021. The vice president, Vo Thi Anh Xuan, will act as interim head of state until the appointment of a successor.
His departure comes shortly after that of two other senior officials who resigned over open investigations into alleged corruption in repatriation flights and the manufacture of COVID-19 screening tests.
