The International Police Agency (Interpol) has issued a red alert for the international community to seek the arrest of Lamin Jadama, a Gambian military officer accused of «conspiracy» in connection with an alleged coup attempt dismantled in December.

The African country’s Executive obtained this Monday the red alert for the arrest of Jadama, as reported by the digital media Kerr Fatou.

With this, there are eight soldiers of the Gambian Armed Forces charged with «treason and conspiracy to commit a felony», while in early January two civilians and a policeman were charged with «concealment of treason and conspiracy».

The authorities, who have appealed to citizens for help, have warned that Jadama is a «fugitive from justice and anyone caught aiding, colluding or harboring him will be dealt with in accordance with the law», reports the aforementioned media.

Gambian National Security Advisor Abubacarr Jeng revealed on December 29 that the authorities were investigating the possible involvement of civilians in the attempt because the perpetrators of the attempt had held clandestine meetings with the collaboration of civilians.

Gambian government spokesman Ebrima Sankareh announced on December 21 the arrest of four soldiers who were «planning to overthrow the democratically elected government of the president». A few days later three other soldiers suspected of involvement in the plan were arrested.

Barrow was sworn in January for a second term after the Supreme Court rejected in late December the appeal filed by the main opposition candidate against the official results of the elections of December 4, 2021.
