The chairman of the British Conservative Party, Nadhim Zahawi, is under fire for tax irregularities during his time as finance minister, a controversy that has prompted Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to order an investigation.
Zawahi was forced to pay a fine to settle a dispute over non-payment of taxes related to the pollster YouGov, in whose foundation he participated in 2000 before making the leap to the House of Commons. According to the BBC, the former minister’s tax problems were resolved between July and September 2022 and the payment would be around 5 million pounds (almost 5.7 million euros).
The ‘Tory’ leader has claimed over the weekend that it was an «oversight», in no case deliberate, but from Labour is already considered «untenable» that he can keep the position. Some party colleagues, such as former leader Iain Duncan Smith, are asking Zawahi to bring everything to light.
Sunak has acknowledged that there are «questions that need to be answered» about this case, so he has asked his independent ethics adviser to look into it. The former minister’s entourage, however, has already made it clear that resignation is not being contemplated for now.
