
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed his «shock» and «sadness» over Saturday’s shooting at a Chinese New Year celebration in Monterey Park in the U.S. state of California.
Guterres’ spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, stressed that the UN Secretary General «extends his heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims» and «wishes a speedy recovery to the injured».
Guterres also «expresses his solidarity with the Asian-American community in the United States» after the event, which took place in a ballroom in the town, located east of the city of Los Angeles.
The man responsible for the mass shooting, 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, was found dead by police inside a van in an apparent suicide. U.S. authorities continue to investigate the incident.
