The Chilean Chamber of Deputies has appointed this Tuesday its 12 experts who will be part of the Constitutional Council in the opening of the new constituent process in the country, all this after the rejection in September of a large majority of the population of the previous proposal.
With 123 votes in favor, four against and four abstentions, the Chilean Lower House approved the list of the 12 people to be appointed to the expert commission, which will also be made up of 50 representatives voted directly by the Chilean people and another 12 appointed by the Senate -who still have to be appointed-.
The sole purpose of this council will be to discuss and approve a proposed text of a new Constitution, and it will be dissolved once the task entrusted to it has been completed. The proposed constitutional norms will be approved by three fifths of the councilors in office, and the final proposal will be submitted to referendum.
The expert commission will be installed on Monday, March 6 and will be composed of 24 people with parity. The commission will have a term of three months to present a preliminary draft to the Constitutional Council, according to the Chamber of Deputies in a press release.
The Constitutional Council will be integrated by supernumerary indigenous seats, assigned according to the percentage of effective vote in the election, as explained by the Senate in a statement.
