The Government of Peru announced Thursday the withdrawal of its ambassador to Honduras, Jorge Raffo Carbajal, in response to comments made by the country’s president, Xiomara Castro, during her speech at the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), where she addressed the Peruvian internal crisis.
«The Government has definitively withdrawn Peru’s ambassador to Honduras in response to the unacceptable interference in internal affairs by President Xiomara Castro in her intervention at CELAC ignoring the constitutional government of the president, Dina Boluarte,» the Peruvian Foreign Ministry said in a Twitter message.
In this regard, it has indicated that «in response to the position adopted by Honduras», relations with that country «will be maintained, indefinitely, at the level of chargé d’affaires», which implies that the withdrawal of the ambassador occurs, at least initially, indefinitely.
On Tuesday, during the CELAC summit, some high officials of Latin American countries criticized Boluarte’s management of the political and social crisis in the country and the measures taken against the demonstrators.
The Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, the Chilean president, Gabriel Boric, and Castro called for the release of the now former Peruvian president Pedro Castillo, detained since December 7 after being dismissed by Congress after attempting to dissolve it in the midst of a confrontation between the different powers.
Carbajal was appointed ambassador in November 2021 during the government of the now former president Pedro Castillo, according to information from the newspaper ‘Gestión’.
