German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will host Italy’s far-right Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni next week in what will be her first official trip to Berlin since taking office in October 2022, the German government has confirmed.
The German government’s deputy spokeswoman, Christiane Hoffmann, has indicated that the meeting is scheduled for February 3 and added that the focus of the agenda will not only be on bilateral issues, but also on European and international matters.
Meloni, leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, governs together with a right-wing alliance. The transalpine country’s government has since toughened its migration policy, which has sparked debates within the European Union (EU) after people rescued by humanitarian organizations in the Mediterranean were unable to find a port to disembark.
