The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has expressed being «deeply hurt» after watching the video showing the death of the young African-American Tyre Nichols after a confrontation with five former police officers in the city of Memphis, in the state of Tennessee, United States.

«I was outraged and deeply hurt to see the horrible video of the beating that caused the death of Tyre Nichols,» Biden said after the Memphis Police released Friday the video of the beating that caused the death of Nichols hours later.

«It is another painful reminder of the deep fear and trauma, pain and exhaustion that black and Hispanic Americans experience every day,» he added, according to a White House statement. The five officers, also of African-American origin, have been indicted for allegedly committing felony murder for the beating of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old African-American man who died three days after the confrontation from injuries inflicted by the five ex-officers.

The Democratic president has also expressed his condolences to Nichols’ family and the Americans in the city of Memphis, saying that the images that have been made public «will leave people justifiably outraged».

In addition, Biden again called on the U.S. Congress to move forward with the George Floyd Police Justice Act.

«When Senate Republicans blocked that bill, I signed an executive order calling for tougher standards on the use of force and accountability provisions for federal law enforcement,» the president specified in the missive.

The prosecution of the five ex-cops comes amid increased scrutiny of how police treat black people, particularly since the May 2020 police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, which sparked the Black Lives Matter protest movement.
