The Peruvian National Police and the Peruvian Army have managed this Monday to unblock the Panamericana Sur highway after a blockade of more than eleven days as a result of the protests that have broken out in the Latin American country to demand the resignation of the president, Dina Boluarte.
At around 13.30 hours (local time), members of the National Police and the Army, together with armored units, have unblocked the section of the highway at kilometer 263, in the Salas Guadalupe district, which was fortified with tires and stones.
As reported by the Peruvian radio station RPP, during the process there have been confrontations between the Peruvian security forces and the demonstrators, although finally the road has been freed after being blocked for more than eleven days.
Shortly after, the Peruvian Prime Minister, Alberto Otárola, said that in the coming days there will be more road blockades throughout the country in regions such as Arequipa and Puno, where protesters have been very active.
«It is important to call on these violent groups to stop taking forceful actions against the safety and lives of people, as well as different public and private entities that are destroying the country,» he said, as reported by the newspaper ‘La República’.
Peru is in the midst of a deep political crisis following the dismissal by the Congress of former president Pedro Castillo, who announced last December 7 the dissolution of the Andean Parliament and the establishment of a government of exception.
Following the arrest of the former president, tens of thousands of people came out to protest in various parts of the country to demand the resignation of President Boluarte, the dissolution of Congress and the urgent calling of presidential elections. More than 60 people have lost their lives in the riots between demonstrators and security forces.
