Thousands of people gathered for the third consecutive day in different U.S. cities over the weekend to protest the death of African-American citizen Tyre Nichols after a confrontation with police in Memphis, in the state of Tennessee.
In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the demonstrations began at noon, where a «large group» of protesters marched through the city, stopping briefly at the Police Department, as reported by the ‘Milwaulee Journal Sentinel’.
In Oakland, California, a march began at 17.00 hours (02.00 Spanish peninsular time) in which the attendees joined the demands for justice for Nichols.
Protesters marched on Saturday through the cities of New York, Atlanta, Boston, Baltimore, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Portland, among other places, demanding an end to abuses of authority. On Friday, the cities of Chicago, Memphis or New York also hosted marches against police brutality.
Nichols, 29, died Jan. 10 from injuries inflicted on him by five former Memphis police officers, who will be prosecuted for allegedly committing felony murder. The young man died three days after police arrested him for alleged reckless driving on his motorcycle.
These protests have been organized after U.S. authorities released the video of the assault on Nichols, which shows how five officers beat the young man and tasered him.
For his part, U.S. President Joe Biden expressed being «deeply hurt» upon seeing the video showing the death of Tyre Nichols. «I was outraged and deeply hurt to see the horrible video of the beating that caused the death of Nichols,» he said.
The trial against the five ex-cops comes amid the social debate on police violence against black people, particularly since the murder at the hands of police officers of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May 2020, after which the protest movement known as ‘Black Lives Matter’ was born.
