Authorities in Italy have activated a tsunami alert due to the fear, which has now disappeared, of the possible arrival of large waves on the southern coasts of the country due to the powerful earthquake registered in the southeast of Turkey, which has forced the paralyzation of transport and classes in some areas.
Civil Protection put Calabria, Sicily and Apulia under alert, in anticipation that a large wave could arrive at around 6.30 am. It recommended the population to stay away from the coast and to remain attentive to possible warnings from local authorities.
As a result of the warnings, rail traffic was also temporarily interrupted, while on the island of Ischia schools have been closed as a precaution, according to the Rai television channel.
More than 1,000 people have died in Turkey and Syria as a result of the powerful earthquake, according to official reports.
