The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has requested on Wednesday that the Government of Peru grant additional protection measures to the Peruvian Attorney General, Patricia Benavides, alleging the dangerousness of the political crisis facing the country.
The IACHR has expressed in a statement that although the State is providing protection to the head of the Attorney General’s Office, this would not be enough, reported RPP radio station.
«It is considered that Patricia Benavides Vargas and her family are at risk due to the current context of institutional crisis and the investigations she is carrying out as the head of the Attorney General’s Office,» reads the communiqué of the organization.
The IACHR’s request comes after an analysis of the situation faced by Peru since last December 7, when former president Pedro Castillo was arrested and dismissed after announcing the dissolution of Congress and the establishment of a government of exception.
Previously, the IACHR condemned the violence provoked by both security forces and demonstrators in Peru’s anti-government protests, in which some fifty people have died in the last month.
«We condemn the violence on the part of the security forces that are in the process of investigation and also the violence that has affected a series of public property,» the commissioner said, according to the aforementioned radio station.
