Ecuador’s Attorney General’s Office (FGE) on Sunday accused the State of interfering in the country’s justice system by announcing the temporary dismissal of all police investigators working in the institution.
The FGE has reported that the director of Human Talent of the National Police has replaced a total of 37 investigators, which it has described as «an interference in justice».
Thus, the agency has also stressed that «the team that is intended to be imposed does not have scientific experience in the criminal field, has not passed confidence tests and will have to be incorporated from scratch to ongoing investigations that show significant progress,» it said in a statement.
In addition, it points out that this action will limit the work that the Prosecutor’s Office has been doing independently and will hinder ongoing investigations into crimes against humanity or possible acts of corruption in cases such as ‘Encuentro’, ‘Papeles de Pandora’, ‘Gabela’, ‘DHRUV’, ‘Bernal’ or ‘Petroecuador’.
Therefore, the FGE has alerted the public about these «harmful actions» and «holds the Ecuadorian State directly responsible for the security of its highest authority and that of his family», in addition to putting at risk the permanence of the persons under investigation.
Following the notification, the National Police of Ecuador released a statement in which it said that its agents continue to support the FGE with the same number of investigators and police officers, and that the dismissal is due to the fact that «only the personnel has been rotated, as is appropriate after serving their term».
