Conservative MPs have put further pressure on UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to declare China a «threat» as part of a comprehensive review of the government’s global security policy.
Although Sunak already ratified last November the «end of the golden age» of UK-China relations in a foreign policy speech in which he warned of the growing authoritarianism of the Asian giant’s president, Xi Jinping, the Tories have called on the British premier to go further.
His predecessor in office, Liz Truss, formally designated China as «the greatest long-term threat to the values and way of life» of the British people. Now, tensions have risen especially in the wake of the presence of several Chinese spy balloons over U.S. territory.
In this regard, MPs have called for a review of the UK’s ability to defend itself against such threats, according to reports in ‘The Guardian’ newspaper. The MP Iain Duncan Smith has accused the authorities of the Chinese region of Xinjiang of murder in relation to the situation of the Uyghur Muslim minority in the country. He described the situation as unacceptable.
