Iran’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations has indicated on Saturday that the resumption of relations with Saudi Arabia, ratified the previous day by announcing the reopening of their respective embassies, will accelerate the achievement of a ceasefire in Yemen.
»It seems that the resumption of political relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia will accelerate the achievement of a ceasefire in Yemen, the start of dialogue of the Yemeni people and the formation of an inclusive national government in this country,» reads a statement from the delegation carried by IRNA news agency.
Thus, the Iranian representative pointed out that relations between Tehran and Riyadh are important at bilateral, regional and international levels, being »positive» also for the Islamic world, according to the agency.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry has also expressed itself in this sense, referring to the foreign policy and the neighborhood policy, stressing that it »trusts in the positive role and implications of this agreement in the realization of mutual interests», as well as those of other regional nations.
»With this momentum, the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran demonstrates that it is firmly determined to realize the interests of the Iranian people and Muslim, friendly and neighboring nations and utilize the possibilities of the region to achieve and strengthen peace and stability, realizing the collective interests of the governments of the region,» reads a statement from the foreign ministry.
This agreement, reached under the key mediation of the Chinese government, restores diplomatic relations between Tehran and Riyadh broken in 2016 following an attack on Saudi missions in Iran by protesters calling to stop the execution of Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr.
Both countries right now are indirectly embroiled through the Yemen war, where Riyadh backs the Yemeni government while Tehran does the same with the Huthi insurgency.
