The serviceman allegedly executed in eastern Ukraine by Russian soldiers has been definitively identified as Oleksander Matsievskyi, a citizen with Moldovan nationality, according to the Government of Moldova, which has denounced what it considers a »war crime» and a violation of international law.
The scene, recorded on video and broadcast on the Internet, has become in the last week a symbol of the abuses perpetrated by Russian forces. Matsievskyi was executed after proclaiming ‘Glory to Ukraine’ and has been posthumously recognized as a ‘hero’ by Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenskyi.
Ukrainian security services have assured that he is a sniper of their Armed Forces, although they have informed neighboring Moldova that he is of Moldovan origin. »We reiterate the firm position of the Republic of Moldova to condemn the brutal war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine,» the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The Moldovan government has confirmed that it will continue to work with Kiev to try to achieve peace and stability in the whole region.
