At least twelve people have died after an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale was felt in Afghanistan, Pakistan and India on Tuesday.
In Pakistan, the authorities of the Provincial Disaster Management Directorate in Jaiber Pakhtunkhua have confirmed the death of nine people, including five men, two women and two children, according to the Pakistani channel ‘Geo TV’.
In addition, more than 160 people have been injured and 19 houses have been destroyed, the Pakistani Provincial Directorate reported.
In the province of Badakhshan, in northeastern Afghanistan and epicenter of the earthquake, at least three people have died and 44 have been injured, a spokesman for the Ministry of Health has confirmed to ‘Khaama Press’, adding that they expect the number of victims to increase as rescue work progresses.
Most of the victims, he told the newspaper, were injured when the roofs of their homes collapsed.
The tremors have also been felt in the north of India, in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu, Kashmir and Punjab, although for the moment the authorities have not confirmed victims, according to the newspaper ‘The Hindustan Times’.
