Indian authorities have raised the death toll to 14 after the floor of a Hindu temple collapsed Thursday in the central Indian town of Indore.
So far 17 people have been rescued, almost all of them had to be hospitalized, of the more than 30 who fell when the temple collapsed due to heavy rains, as confirmed by the NDTV channel.
According to the channel, a large concrete slab covered a 12-meter-deep pit with a water level of almost three meters. It has also obtained documents proving that already last year, local residents informed the private company that owns the temple of the poor state of the facilities.
The events coincided with the celebration of Rama Navami, a Hindu festival commemorating the birth of the god Rama, which apparently attracted a large number of worshippers to the area.
The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, has expressed his sorrow for what happened and has offered the help of the central government to the regional authorities. »My prayers are with all those affected and their families,» he said on Twitter.
Modi has contacted the chief minister of the state of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who has also joined the condolences and offered money to compensate the victims for the tragedy.
