Taiwan’s National Ministry of Defense has detected early Sunday morning 15 fighter jets and four Chinese Army warships near its island.
»Four of the aircraft have been detected in the southwest and southeast in the air defense perimeter,» the ministry announced on its Twitter account, and has deployed fighter jets, Navy ships and activated ground-based missile launching systems in response to the invasion of its airspace, while continuing to monitor the situation closely.
China’s military conducted military maneuvers in the area last weekend, which included the deployment of an aircraft carrier that has conducted »simulations» of a »blockade» and »attacks» around the island of Taiwan.
The escalation of tensions in the region began with the trip to the island of the then Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, in August last year, although they have rebounded after the meeting between Tsai and McCarthy. Taiwan has had an independent government since 1949, but China considers the territory under its sovereignty.
