Biden blames the Republican setback in the midterms on the vagueness of his message and Trump’s shadow

U.S. President Joe Biden has blamed the poor performance of the Republican Party in the U.S. legislative elections on the lack of clarity in its electoral messages represented in a general discourse intoxicated by the constant presence of former President Donald Trump.

Biden’s Democratic Party secured a new majority in the U.S. Senate early this morning with the victory of Catherine Cortez Masto in the state of Nevada. Although it does not seem likely to repeat its majority in the House of Representatives, which will pass to the Republicans barring a hecatomb, the results of the local elections reveal the displeasure of the population towards Republican candidates close to former President Trump.

«I heard it from someone in the press: ‘All Trump has done is reveal what the Republican Party really is,'» Biden has said from the ASEAN/EAS summit in Cambodia. «I think what they have to decide now, as we have in the past, is who they are,» he added.

By contrast, Biden has applauded the unity exhibited by Democratic candidates in this election in offering a common front on such polarizing issues as abortion rights. «There is no one who has run with a different discourse,» said the president before thanking «the incredible turnout that has reflected the quality of the Democratic candidates».

Biden has even been relatively optimistic about a possible turnaround in the results to the House of Representatives. «It would be a feat and everything should go in our favor, but I am confident that it can happen. We can win. Be that as it may, it’s going to be neck and neck,» he said.
