Biden says midterm results demonstrate U.S. commitment to global issues

U.S. President Joe Biden said Monday that the results of the U.S. midterm congressional elections held on November 8 demonstrate the country’s commitment to global affairs.

«I think the elections held in the United States — which still leave some uncertainty — send a very strong message around the world that the United States is willing to play,» Biden said at a press conference in Indonesia on the eve of the G20 Summit.

The president made these statements two days after the election results gave the Senate victory -by a narrow margin- to the Democrats, while the vote count continues to know who will have control of the House of Representatives.

«The United States, both the Republicans who survived and the Democrats, are of the opinion that we are going to remain fully engaged in the world», explained the US president, after meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, a meeting in which both leaders advocated promoting «cooperation» in the face of global challenges.

Biden and Xi, during a meeting in the margins of the G20 summit, have indicated that they will promote cooperation to avoid conflicts. «Competitiveness should never overstep the boundaries and bring parties into conflict,» he said.

The meeting came three months after U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a controversial visit to Taiwan, an issue that has fueled controversy and encouraged Chinese military maneuvers in the area.

The world leaders are in Bali, Indonesia, as part of an international trip to attend the G20 Summit, which begins on Tuesday. In the preceding days, the U.S. president has attended the COP27 climate summit in Egypt and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Cambodia.
