The G20, attended by the world’s leading economies, has expressed «deep concern» about the global food crisis, according to a draft of the final joint statement of the summit in Indonesia.

Global food security has been «exacerbated by ongoing conflicts and tensions,» the G20 members said, calling for the use of «all available tools» to fight the crisis and «protect the most vulnerable from hunger.»

In this way, the member states, including Russia, have promised to «take measures to promote food and energy security and support market stability by providing temporary and targeted support,» according to the document accessed by the dpa agency.

«We will take further coordinated measures to address food security challenges, including price rises and shortages of food commodities and fertilizers globally.»

The war in Ukraine, triggered on February 24 by the invasion order given by Russian President Vladimir Putin, has had a serious impact on world food markets, as both Kiev and Moscow are considered two major global grain exporters.

WELCOME MORE CLIMATE EFFORTS The world’s leading economies have also proposed encouraging climate protection efforts, as well as funding avenues to pursue climate policies.

The signatory countries «welcome» expanded and new climate action. They also call on all parties to «urgently scale up» emission reductions, adaptation to the consequences of climate change, as well as «means of implementation».

At the same time, the group has urged «progress» in negotiations on reparations for damages caused by climate change in poor regions, a controversial issue that is also at the top of the agenda of the COP27 climate summit being held in Egypt.

The goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius per year as agreed in the Paris pact «requires meaningful and effective action and commitment by all countries».

«We recall and urge developed countries to fulfill their commitments to jointly mobilize $100 billion per year urgently by 2020 and up to 2025 in the context of meaningful mitigation action and transparency in implementation,» the group adds in the draft statement.

In this field, the countries have also reaffirmed that fossil fuel subsidies be eliminated «in the medium term.»
