The European Parliament will pronounce itself on the human rights situation in Qatar, after the Left group managed to introduce changes in the agenda to include a resolution on the case of the Gulf country, in the middle of the debate with the start of the World Cup.
The vote to change the plenary agenda to include a resolution went ahead with 181 votes in favor, 165 against and 32 abstentions, with the European People’s Party and the Group of Socialists and Democrats voting en bloc against.
«We demand the recognition of the complicity of European companies and the creation of compensation funds,» said the spokeswoman of the Left in the European Parliament, Manon Aubry, who has taken the proposal forward after joining Liberals and Greens, in a vote at the beginning of the plenary when not all MEPs were in the hemicycle, which has facilitated the maneuver.
Before this last-minute change, a debate in the European Parliament on the human rights situation in the context of the World Cup in Qatar, which is held on Monday with the participation of the Commissioner for Health, Stella Kyriakides, was scheduled on the agenda.
