Bolsonaro’s allies admit that questioning elections only serves to inflame protests

Jair Bolsonaro’s political allies have recognized behind the scenes that the audit presented by the Liberal Party (PL) against the election results has no prospect of succeeding and that its objective is to inflame protests that in recent days have been on the rise, with acts of sabotage, aggressions and kidnappings.

On the eve of the PL claim, the Brazilian Supreme Court warned its president, Valdemar Costa Neto, that it would have no chance of succeeding, something he knew, but justified that he will go ahead to avoid a rebellion within the core of the party most sympathetic to Bolsonaro.

Not even the most unconditional allies of the still president of Brazil trust that the Superior Electoral Court will change the result of the elections, however, at least, they hope that it will serve to establish the doubt that Bolsonaro was a victim of electoral fraud, as he was warning of such possibility during the electoral campaign.

Thus, according to a conversation between the regulars to the meetings with Bolsonaro at the Alvorada Palace, to which the newspaper ‘Folha de Sao Paulo’ has had access, the actions of the PL would at least serve to inflame the mood in the streets.

In recent days, road blockades and protests have intensified especially in states such as Mato Grosso, Santa Catarina and Rondônia – where Bolsonaro obtained better electoral results – and acts of sabotage have been registered that could be framed as possible crimes of terrorism.

Since the news of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s victory, thousands of people have swarmed at the gates of Army barracks to call for a coup d’état between prayers and Nazi salutes, or else cutting off traffic by burning vehicles, sabotaging infrastructure and attacking policemen and drivers.

For the opposition, this new attempt to question the electoral result is nothing more than a plan that has been orchestrated throughout the last years, intensified when Lula da Silva recovered his political rights. Since then they have been attacking the electronic ballot boxes, now the target of this PL audit, the acronym under which Bolsonaro ran for election.

In these, the Brazilian press has recalled an interview in May by the STB channel to one of Bolsonaro’s sons, Flávio, in which he said that the distrust of some for the electronic ballot boxes could generate «a revolt» and «danger of instability».
