Borrell welcomes ‘common sense’ agreement between Serbia and Kosovo and will work to ‘normalize’ relations

EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell has welcomed the fact that the authorities in Serbia and Kosovo have «come to their senses» and agreed on a «common sense» solution to the license plate dispute so that they can now focus «on what really matters».

For Borrell, this debate has weighed down the work for the «normalization» of relations between Belgrade and Pristina, which he hopes to relaunch «in the coming days» with a new meeting in Brussels with delegates from both sides.

The head of European diplomacy, who appeared before the media on the occasion of the meeting of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), recalled that the EU acts as a «facilitator» in this dialogue, in which it has been «struggling» since August, when tensions in the area soared.

The agreement finally did not arrive until late Wednesday and implies, for Belgrade, to stop issuing license plates with the names of Kosovar cities and, for Pristina, not to apply a rule that would imply a new registration of vehicles already in circulation.

Borrell warned that this agreement «avoids a new crisis that could have generated violence».
