Jordanian authorities have claimed to have prevented an attempt to smuggle drugs across the border into Syria, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of four suspects, according to Syrian media.
The Jordanian Customs Department said that the Border Guard seized 10,000 Captaron tablets and one kilogram of methamphetamine in a truck coming from Syrian territory, according to the Jordanian state news agency Petra.
The cargo was found in two cartons of cigarettes hidden in the cabin of the truck, he said, before stressing that the authorities are working to protect the economy and the citizens of the country from trafficking and smuggling networks.
The Jordanian authorities have not said anything about victims or detainees, although the Syrian news portal Al Suwayda 24 said on its website that four bodies were found in the border area and added that they were members of a smuggling gang.
This media indicated that all of them were shot dead by the Jordanian Border Guard and stressed that the incident resulted in damage to several houses in the town of Khirbet Auad, located in the province of Suwaida, near the border with Jordan.
