On Thursday, the Peruvian Congress approved an opinion that seeks to amend the Constitution to establish the holding of general elections in 2023, despite the fact that these should take place in 2026.

«With 11 votes in favor, the Constitution Committee approved an opinion that proposes the constitutional reform to establish the electoral process General Elections 2023,» the Parliament has informed in a statement on the social network Twitter.

This opinion, promoted by parliamentary groups in the opposition, aims to reform the Magna Carta to shorten the mandates of the Government and the Congress, although it will have to gather the favorable vote of at least 87 of the 130 congressmen in two consecutive legislatures.

However, if the proposal reaches 66 votes in favor in a single legislature, it could be submitted to a referendum, as reported by ‘El Comercio’.

This is not the first time that Congress has tried to reduce the time of a legislature. During the government of former Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra, a constitutional reform was presented that sought to shorten the legislative and presidential term to 2020, instead of 2021.
