Peruvian President Pedro Castillo denied on Saturday that his government is contemplating the closure of Congress to prevent the House from passing a vacancy motion against him, and called on the legislature to work «together» in favor of the country.
«At a difficult time for the country, with a crisis due to the fifth wave of the pandemic, I ratify my commitment to democracy, the rule of law and the Constitution.» «I categorically reject that my government is plotting a shutdown of Congress to avoid a vacancy,» he said on his social networks.
Likewise, the president has called on the Parliament and the rest of the institutions to maintain «the broadest unity» to work together to solve the «big problems» as they have been appointed to do for a period of five years.
Castillo’s publication took place after the Minister of Defense, Daniel Barragán, presented his letter of resignation, according to Andina news agency. He has indicated that his resignation responds to personal reasons, but there is talk in the country of a disagreement between the two politicians.
