The Peruvian Congress has approved this Wednesday in an extraordinary session a motion of censure against President Pedro Castillo for moral incapacity, shortly after he announced the dissolution of the chamber and the call for new legislative elections.

The Peruvian parliamentarian Edward Malaga presented last November 29th a third motion of censure against President Castillo, which was finally approved this Wednesday by the Congress with 101 votes in favor out of the 87 needed. Of the 130 deputies, only a few from Perú Libre voted against it, as reported by the Peruvian radio station RPP.

After the vote, Peru’s vice-president, Dina Boluarte, will assume the presidency, as reflected in the Constitution.

Hours earlier, Castillo had announced during a speech to the nation the dissolution of Congress and the call for new legislative elections. As a consequence, a cascade of resignations has followed within his Executive.

Among those who have resigned are the Ministers of Labor, Alejandro Salas; of Education, Rosendo Serna; and of Foreign Affairs, César Landa, who has accused Castillo of having «violated» the Constitution by closing the Congress.
