The European Union called on Wednesday for dialogue to ensure stability in Peru, following the removal of President Pedro Castillo, who has been arrested at the Lima Prefecture headquarters.

«We support the political, democratic and peaceful solution adopted by Peru’s institutions. We call on all actors in Peru to a dialogue that ensures stability in the institutional framework,» reads a joint communiqué from the embassies of the EU Member States through the delegation of the institution in the Latin American country.

The member states of the European Union have indicated that they are «closely following the events», while stressing that they reject «any act contrary to the Constitution and the rule of law», reads the missive issued on Wednesday night.

Pedro Castillo was dismissed this Wednesday, after a motion of censure was passed in the Peruvian Congress. Hours before, the president had ordered the dissolution of the Courts, the establishment of a state of emergency by imposing a curfew, and the calling of new elections.

He was then arrested by order of the Peruvian Attorney General’s Office. The former vice-president, Dina Boluarte, assumed the Peruvian presidency.
