Peru’s Public Prosecutor’s Office has reported that it is collecting images from security cameras at the Government Palace in search of evidence against the now former President Pedro Castillo, who is in custody after being removed from office by Congress following a motion of censure in what many have described as an attempted «self-coup d’état».
Thus, prosecutors have launched simultaneous operations in the Government Palace, the seat of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and several Ministries of the country to obtain evidence in the framework of the investigation for alleged rebellion and conspiracy against Castillo.
The proceedings, which are in charge of the area of Illicit Enrichment and Constitutional Complaints of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, were initiated after the Public Prosecutor’s Office announced the opening of a preliminary investigation against Castillo for allegedly acting against the powers of the State and the constitutional order in Peru.
«We have just finished the sealing of the cameras, that is what has delayed us (it is) to see the people (who accompanied Pedro Castillo during the broadcasting of the message in which he ordered to close the Congress and establish a government of exception)», said Prosecutor Zoila Marianela, according to information from RPP radio station.
Sources close to the matter have suggested that the former president of the Council of Ministers Betssy Chávez and her predecessor in the position, Aníbal Torres, appear in these recordings. The Attorney General, Patricia Benavides, and the prosecutor Marita Barreto, coordinator of the special team of prosecutors against corruption, together with several police officers, have also gone to the Government headquarters.
