The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Colombian Chargé d’Affaires in Lima to express its «surprise» at the statements made by the country’s authorities regarding recent events in the Andean nation.

The diplomatic portfolio has expressed that he has been reminded that in Peru there is «full respect for Human Rights, due process and separation of powers», which guarantees access to independent justice, in a statement released through Twitter.

«The Government of Peru will continue to deepen the friendship, cooperation and integration that unite both peoples, based on mutual respect, full respect for international law and shared values on democracy and human rights,» they concluded.

The Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, had regretted in recent days that Castillo had resorted to anti-democratic methods, however he had pointed out that for months a «parliamentary coup» has been brewing in Congress against the former president.

Furthermore, Petro had demanded the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to establish precautionary measures for the ousted president and arrested for rebellion.
