The Colombian Attorney General’s Office confirmed on Monday the capture of the members of ‘Los Químicos’, a gang specialized in adulterating liquors and falsifying quality seals to simulate the authenticity of alcoholic beverages.
According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the alcoholic beverages were counterfeited mainly in the capital of Colombia, Bogota, and the city of Barranquilla, where the liquors were also distributed, according to RCN Radio.
The sectional director of the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Bogota, José Manuel Martínez, pointed out that the imitations were sent to Scotland so that a group of experts could determine whether they were counterfeit or not.
«The experts were surprised by the quality of the whiskey stamps (…) We had to take these stamps to Scotland to analyze the adulteration process», said Martínez, who assures that the experts had «never» come across a case of such quality.
Those captured have been prosecuted and charged with the crimes of conspiracy to commit a crime and food corruption, charges that were not accepted, so the members of ‘Los Químicos’ have been sent to a penitentiary as a security measure.
